Test Drive a Habit - Reading with Kids - Month 2

In month one of my quest to Test Drive a Habit each month, I read the Bible each day.  Bible Reading worked out really well and my wife joined me which added accountability and additional conversation.  For this month I’ve decided to once again include my family.  My goal for this month is to spend time every day reading with my children.

A little background on my kids.  My son is 7 years old and is currently in Kindergarten.  He is what most would term autistic.  My daughter is 5 years old and will be in Kindergarten next year.  They both really like to be read to and are just starting to get confidence reading aloud.  My son likes to “read in his head” which is good and bad.  It is good because he is reading, but bad because he goes so fast that he skips over words.  By having him read to me, it slows him down and forces him to focus on the individual words.

I think this will be a beneficial in giving me intentional time with the kids.  It will also benefit them as they are just learning to read and hopefully they can read some books to me and I can read some books to them in the coming month.  We’ll see how it goes.

I also plan to continue my month 1 habit of daily bible reading.  I’ll continue to post some snippets of my journaling in order to keep me on task and accountable.

Below are my attempted Test Drive a Habit challenges.

  • January - Daily Bible Reading
  • February - Daily Reading with Kids
  • March - Daily Leisure Reading
  • April - Daily Exercise
  • May - No Complaining
  • June - No Meat
  • July - Daily 6am Wake up
